A Replit app runs on Replit's infrastructure, so a SQL Server on your own network is unreachable from it by default. Rather than exposing the database, this walkthrough puts DreamFactory in front of it, generates a governed REST API with a read-only role and a scoped key, and has the Replit app's backend call that API to build a live delivery operations dashboard.
What you’ll learn
- Why an app hosted on Replit cannot reach a database on your network
- Generating a governed REST API over on-prem SQL Server
- Calling that API from the Replit app's backend with a scoped key
- Keeping the database credential entirely out of the Replit project
Frequently asked questions
Can a Replit app query an on-premise SQL Server?
Only through something the Replit app can actually reach. Replit runs in its own cloud, so it has no route into your private network. Giving it an HTTPS REST API in front of the database solves that, which is what DreamFactory provides here.
Is it safe to put database credentials in Replit secrets?
This approach avoids the question entirely. No database credential goes into the Replit project at all — DreamFactory holds it. Replit stores only a scoped API key, and that key is bound to a read-only role, so its blast radius is limited to the data that role exposes.
Do I need a VPN or tunnel to connect Replit to my database?
No. A tunnel is one way to solve reachability, but it still exposes a database protocol and still needs credentials. Here the only thing published is an HTTPS API with role-based access control in front of it, and the database stays closed.
